YOGA WITH A VIEW: THE ULTIMATE STRESS-RELIEF IN LONG BEACH
By Monique Garcia
Let’s be honest, whenever you find that you have free time in your busy schedule, your first thought is not going to be trying a yoga class in the park. Whether you have your own fitness routine or you would rather dedicate any spare moments to other hobbies, it always feels like there are other things to do. As someone who never owned a yoga mat before in their life, I think Yoga on the Bluff can change your mind.
A Calm Corner Of Long Beach
Yoga on the Bluff is as calming as it is beautiful and overlooks one of the best ocean views in Long Beach. Founded 16 years ago by Dharma Shakti, the creator of the Yogalution Movement, this free yoga class was designed to be inclusive and welcomes anyone looking to clear their mind and stretch their body. The goal was simple: create a community-driven space where wellness can be accessible to all. It’s clear that this vision has taken root—just take a look at the dedicated participants who come day after day.
What To Expect At Yoga On The Bluff
Sessions are held daily at 11am at Ocean & Junipero. Classes are year-round with very few cancellations unless the weather isn’t cooperative. The best part? You don’t need much to get started! An open mind is the most important thing to bring. It sounds silly but yes, even the yoga mat isn’t a necessity if you are okay with working out on the grass. That said, it is recommended you bring a towel, sunscreen, water, and comfortable footwear (sandals or slides are perfect). Free or metered parking is available close by if needed.

In my first session at Yoga on the Bluff, I was a bit nervous. Despite owning dozens of comfortable yoga pants, I have never tried yoga. To be honest, when I thought of yoga, I imagined something like the contortionists who perform at Cirque du Soleil. But to my surprise, the first few minutes were dedicated to deep breathing and positive affirmations.
The instructors made it clear: this time was for you. It wasn’t about doing complicated poses, it was about relaxation and being present in the moment. The pace of the exercise was calm and easy to follow, with each new pose instruction followed by helpful tips and reminders to breathe. Overall, it resembled a very peaceful game of Simon Says. When I ultimately got lost, it was easy to just glance at my neighbors and get back on track.
Despite being right next to a busy intersection, the ocean breeze and sound of the singing bowls or steel drums made the area feel surprisingly peaceful. Another great perk about the class? There are different instructors every day, each who offer different yoga styles and guidance so you can explore what works best for you.

Conversation With Justin Rudd
You may know Justin Rudd, a prominent local activist and Long Beach celebrity, from his work in the community. He started attending Yoga on the Bluff a little over a year ago with his niece and has been a regular ever since. When I asked him what he loved about the experience, he didn’t even hesitate to say, “It’s almost like therapy. The instructors only have positive words and lots of encouragement for you. And sitting in the fresh air and the wind in your face— its absolutely beautiful.”
For Justin, attending Yoga on the Bluff is about being in the moment. “When I’m here I feel like I can focus on the now and work to really be present,” he shared. “And it’s great to see so many people coming together to exercise and get some peace of mind. There is so much diversity here with people from all fitness levels and walks of life.”
Why You Should Attend
Whether you’re a seasoned yogi, a beginner, or someone just looking to unwind in the sunshine and breeze, Yoga on the Bluff is a perfect opportunity to stretch and unwind. And since it’s free, there is no pressure or obligation to commit. Just show up when you can and do what you can. Plus, it’s a great way to spend time with family in the fresh air, dogs and kids are both allowed.

Advice From Yogis

“Yoga is your own. It’s not like you have to follow everything super strictly or compete with your neighbor.” - Natalie Gath
“You don’t have to wear anything specific, just come exactly as you are and do your best.” - Amber Minter
