The Green Family
By Carleigh Latimer
HOW WE GOT HERE
Horace and Jessie Green became Long Beach residents in 1896. Horace’s family came from England in 1882 and immigrated to Boston. A contracting job brought Horace to Whittier, CA, where he met Jessie who lived in Anaheim. In 1893, they married, and by 1896, they were living in Long Beach. Horace Green built one of the historic homes in Long Beach on 4th and Junipero and constructed two homes in Signal Hill side-by-side.
WHO’S STILL HERE
Generations 3 through 6 are all still in Long Beach with the exception of one family member and myself; I am currently in Newport Beach. Otherwise, everyone is still in Long Beach including my grandma, who resides in her childhood home, with my grandpa at 91.
FAMILY MEMORIES
When I was in 4th grade, in 2001, my grandma was Woman of the Year in Long Beach. She was given the award for her 40 years of community service in: education, community welfare, and cultural heritage. She served as PTA president at Hughes Middle School and Poly High School, and also on the board of the Junior League for 6 years. She spent 17 years in city commissions and is best known for historic preservation as president of Long Beach Heritage and the Navy Trust.
