MEET DECLAN PETERS, LONG BEACH’S YOUNGEST AND MOST DILIGENT “UNOFFICIAL” CROSSING GUARD

By Marina Hernandez

“Oh there he is!” I say to myself as I approach the intersection of Stearns and Palo Verde. He’s a bubbly 8 year old with straight shaggy hair, busy feet, and a stop sign firmly gripped in his palm. By his side, his grandma Liz with a big caring smile and the same busy feet.

Like many inquisitive kids, Declan has a fascination with trash trucks, construction vehicles and street signs. Perhaps he is most keenly aware of the various types of street signs due to an emphasis on safety entwined in his ASD (autism spectrum disorder) behavioral plan. With the guided support of his family, Declan has combined his interest in stop signs with his regard for safety to help create a safe environment for unsuspecting pedestrians. “I love that he finds joy in serving his community at such a young age,” remarks Declan’s grandma Liz, whom he calls Mahggy (sounds like Froggy).

Nearly every Saturday around noon, Declan and his Mahggy have helped dozens cross safely over the busy streets of Stearns and Palo Verde. There are boys on mini motorbikes, families carrying boxes of Simone’s donuts, Shih Tzus and Labradors, and Ethan, the Circle K employee on his lunch break. All graciously accept Declan’s help.

“[This is] a beautiful story of giving where you can. Doing what you’re interested in and never underestimating the power of one to do good,” shares family friend CeCe Arroyo.

Declan is best friends with Dad.

He also loves his teachers at Emerson, mail carrier Liz, crossing guard Karen and siblings

Jack and Nohea.

Declan likes:

1. Using Apple Maps on his iPad

2. City vehicles like the recycling truck

3. His pets and ALL of the animals in his neighborhood

Declan dislikes:

1. Unexpected loud noises

2. Waiting in line or getting “dropped off”
